A lot of people I know don’t know what a firearm is. They either believe they don’t know or they assume they’re not allowed to own one because they think it was stolen or something. I’d like to set the record straight for them.
To understand what a firearm is is to understand exactly what it can do. It is an incredibly versatile piece of kit that allows for the safe, simple, and stealthy disarming of your target. The gun itself is usually a small, non-lethal device that is often used for self-defense, but can also be used to defend someone else. One of the most popular variations of the gun is the assault rifle. The gun is easy to conceal and highly effective at hunting.
All of that said, the new Michigan law that went into effect last week is pretty harsh on the use of guns. The law prohibits you from carrying a gun on a boat, within 1,000 feet of a school, while intoxicated. This is pretty serious stuff. In the same way, the new law prohibits carrying a gun on federal property. It’s also very serious stuff.
In Michigan, gun owners have a few options. But a firearm can only be legally used in certain situations. For example, at some state parks where there is no public park, you can use a gun if you’re in your fifties. Another example is if you have a kid who’s been in a “cab” for years, you can use a gun if you’re young and you’re under 5 years old.
At first glance this sounds a little ridiculous, but the idea of being able to use a gun in public is very empowering. For example, last year I was driving with my son around the city and he said, “Dad you can use my gun in front of everybody.” There were a few people who came up to my car and asked my son to put a bullet through one of the tires so they would know what it was for and so they could have better insurance.
And then I wondered, if he had just said that, would he have even been able to get a gun? Because the problem with law-abiding citizens is when you stop thinking of laws as something that can actually be enforced and instead think of them as what they are: rules.
And I said that I would have had a gun if he hadn’t been able to get one. But that was the last time I would have used my gun. It’s pretty obvious there’s no real reason why I shouldn’t have the gun.
You know what the problem is exactly? People shoot guns and they wind up dead. The guns are dangerous. The laws are not.

There are many reasons why we should have more gun laws. One is that our culture glorifies the use of guns, while failing to recognize that the vast majority of gun owners are not violent and don’t deserve to die.
